We at LiNK truly believe that this idea can become a reality for motherless or orphaned North Korean children living in China. How do these children end up in this situation? Upon crossing the North Korea-China border, North Korean women often wed Chinese men, either voluntarily or as victims of sex trafficking. Many have children who are eligible for Chinese citizenship and education due to their Chinese national fathers. However, many fathers do not obtain documentation for their North Korean-Chinese children for fear of repatriation for the mothers, who often eventually end up repatriated, leave their homes due to abuse or neglect, or resettle as refugees in a third country – ultimately leaving their children behind. Consequently, the fathers are often unable to make a living, leaving these children to be cared for by relatives, or completely abandoned. The unfortunate reality is that these children can’t receive education, work legally, or have basic rights in China since they are not legitimately documented and have no paperwork. These children have infinite potential to become self-sufficient adults who can contribute positively to society (and maybe one day in North Korea), if only they could have the opportunity of education, consistent mental and health care and proper nurturing.
A new program, will invest in these children by doing just this: providing shelter, food, clothing, proper care through qualified caregivers, and most importantly, an education. The goal is to help these kids make it from elementary school through whatever level of education they desire to pursue, even sending them to high school, college or Technical School and eventually helping them to find jobs.
Will not only cover basic monthly costs, including living and medical expenses, rent, education and caregivers’ costs,, but ultimately help LiNK achieve Project: SEEDs' goal – to invest in these children by giving them the opportunity of an education and a better life. The hope is that one day these children will give back by returning to the project and providing the same opportunities to other children in need.
